Andrew Thurston

Andrew grew up in Southend-on-Sea, Essex. After qualifying from Cambridge University and the Westminster Medical School in 1977, he went on to training posts in Cambridge, Bury St Edmunds, Portsmouth and London. After a short spell as a locum consultant in Hastings, he went on to his first consultant appointment in Doncaster, South Yorkshire, in 1992. Despite becoming a popular and well respected member of the community there, he always missed the South of England, and decided to make the move to West Herts. Andrew's major interests are urological cancer, and diagnostic urology; he has studied the up to date management of prostate and bladder cancer with Mark Soloway in Miami, and with Patrick Walsh at Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore. More recently he has received training and increasing experience of laparoscopic renal surgery, and is currently in the process of making laparoscopic radical prostatectomy available locally. He is also developing the role of the urologist in ultrasound techniques, making one stop assessment of patients with prostate problems a reality, as well as introducing a one stop haematuria clinic at Hemel Hempstead.

Outside of the hospital environment, Andrew is married, and has 3 grown up daughters. He enjoys playing the violin, and is a member of the Hertfordshire Philharmonic Orchestra. He is also a keen crossword solver, and cites Araucaria of the Guardian Newspaper as his favourite compiler.
